Hospice Volunteers provide companionship and support to patients with a limited life expectancy along with providing support to their families. Volunteers are valued members of our Hospice Team and provide services it otherwise could not offer. Volunteers can visit in patients homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and our Inpatient Hospice Unit. Volunteer duties include listening to the patients life stories, reading and providing what the patient wishes to share with their volunteer. Each volunteer provides their own special skills and talents to the hospice department.

18-20 hours of training is provided. Support and training are provided on a continuous basis to support the volunteer in their role.

I could not have possibly envisioned that my three planned months with hospice would voluntarily develop into a three-year time commitment, and that this venture would make an indelible impact on my life, as well as, hopefully, on the lives of others.
Neighborhood Hospice is a hospice organization. The agency coordinates a large pool of volunteers, nurses, doctors, specialists, family, and patients. Through hospice, I have learned how to talk with different kinds of people, but more importantly, I have learned to listen. Also, my level of patience has increased significantly as a result of volunteering, as I have gained the ability to relate with people, even if they appear unable to comprehend a word I say.

One of the most gratifying things I've ever done.
Having been a volunteer with the Neighborhood Health Agency exposed me to a world I did not know much about, and that is the world of hospice and volunteering. I got to meet interesting people and listen to their life stories. Although many of the people I met were nearing the end of their lives and had all sorts of ailments they still had much to talk about. For anyone interested in making a difference in the lives of another, volunteering is definitely the way to go. It shows that you care for others and are willing to make sacrifices. If anyone would ask me if I would do it again, I would automatically say, "YES"!

I got to help people in need of it and make some friends along the way. I will never forget it.
I gained a sincere appreciation for volunteer organizations and the people who put all that time and effort into running them. I know that my experience has been worthwhile and meaningful and I thank Hospice for giving me that opportunity. Finally, I most certainly have a greater appreciation for life in general.
